The Pre-Kindergarten years are an exciting stage of growth as children develop greater independence, confidence, and readiness for school. At Newleaf Learning & Childcare Centre, our Pre-Kindergarten Program provides a learning experience that closely reflects the structure and expectations of an actual kindergarten classroom while maintaining the joy of play-based learning.
Our program supports children as they strengthen their early literacy, numeracy, social, and self-help skills, preparing them for a smooth and confident transition to kindergarten.
Educators guide children through meaningful learning experiences that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Children are encouraged to explore ideas, ask questions, and express their creativity while building confidence in their abilities.
Kindergarten Readiness and Early Academics
Children are introduced to foundational learning concepts through engaging and developmentally appropriate activities, including:
- Letter recognition and phonetic sound awareness
- Name recognition and early writing skills
- Recognizing and writing their own names
- Early reading readiness through storytelling, books, and group discussions
- Early numeracy experiences such as counting, sorting, measuring, and pattern recognition
Independence and Self-Help Skills
An important focus of the Pre-Kindergarten program is helping children become more independent and confident in caring for themselves. Educators support children in developing self-help skills such as:
- Managing personal belongings
- Dressing independently
- Cleaning up after activities
- Taking responsibility within the classroom community
Safety and Awareness
Children also begin learning important safety concepts in a supportive and age-appropriate way. These include:
- Stranger awareness and personal safety
- Learning and recognizing their parents’ names and phone numbers
- Understanding basic safety rules at school and in the community
Creativity and Exploration
Children continue to explore creativity and imagination through:
- Art exploration and learning about different artists
- Dramatic play and storytelling
- Music and movement
- Nature exploration and outdoor learning
Yoga and Mindfulness
Yoga and mindfulness activities help children develop focus, body awareness, and emotional regulation. These practices support children in building calmness, confidence, and positive social interactions.
Collaborative Learning
Children work together on projects and group activities that promote communication, cooperation, and problem solving. These experiences help children develop strong friendships and social skills.
At Newleaf Learning & Childcare Centre, our Pre-Kindergarten Program supports children in becoming confident learners, independent thinkers, and socially capable individuals who are well prepared for their next step into kindergarten and school life.
