The Junior Kindergarten years are a time when children’s curiosity, creativity, and confidence begin to flourish. At Newleaf Learning & Childcare Centre, our Junior Kindergarten Program supports children as they develop greater independence, strengthen social relationships, and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Our program provides a balanced approach to learning, combining play-based exploration with meaningful opportunities to develop early literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills. Through engaging experiences, children are encouraged to ask questions, investigate ideas, and express their thoughts and creativity.
Educators guide children in developing important social and emotional skills such as cooperation, empathy, communication, and self-confidence. As children interact with their peers and educators, they learn to share ideas, solve problems together, and build strong friendships.
The learning experiences in our Junior Kindergarten program include opportunities for:
- Early literacy development through storytelling, books, songs, and conversations
- Letter recognition and sound awareness through playful language activities
- Name recognition and early writing experiences, helping children recognize and begin to write their own names
- Early numeracy experiences such as counting, sorting, measuring, and recognizing patterns
- Creative expression through art, music, and dramatic play
- Exploration of artists and different forms of artistic expression
- Nature exploration and outdoor learning experiences
- Yoga and mindfulness practices that support focus, calmness, and emotional awareness
- Inquiry and project-based learning that encourages curiosity and investigation
Our classrooms provide open-ended materials and thoughtfully designed learning areas that encourage children to explore ideas independently and collaboratively. Educators observe children’s interests and extend learning opportunities that build curiosity and confidence.
Outdoor play remains an important part of each day, giving children opportunities to develop physical skills, build resilience, and connect with the natural world.
Through supportive guidance and engaging learning experiences, children in our Junior Kindergarten Program develop the confidence, curiosity, and foundational skills that prepare them for the next stage of their learning journey.
At Newleaf Learning & Childcare Centre, we nurture children who grow to be confident learners, creative thinkers, and compassionate members of their community.
